Eating Disorder Glossary and List of Terms

Adolescent conditions: Symptoms that are evident due to puberty
Anorexia Nervosa: A disorder where a distorted sense of body image leads to self-starvation to the point of death in some cases.
Anxiety Disorders: Various syndromes with excessive anxiety, phobias, or fear.
Behavioral disorders: Disorders affecting behavior and emotional wellbeing
Binge eating disorder: Excessive overeating but without purging
Body Dysmorphic Disorder: Delusional belief about body shape or appearance
Bowel movements: Changes in type or frequency of bowel motions
Bulimia nervosa: Eating disorder with binging (overeating) and purging (vomiting).
Cardiac arrest: Stoppage of the heart, usually caused by heart attack
Chemical addiction: Addiction to and abuse of various substances.
Constipation: Difficult or dry bowel movements
Death: The cessation of life
Depression: Persistent depressed mood with various depressive symptoms.
Diabetic Gastroparesis: Slow stomach emptying from diabetic nerve damage
Digestive symptoms: Any symptoms affecting the digestive tract.
Disordered Eating: Unusual and troubled eating habits
Dissociative Identity Disorder: A disorder where there are two or more distinct identities or personality states
Eating Disorder not Otherwise Specified (ENDOS): Eating disorder that does not match a specific category.
Eating symptoms: Symptoms related to eating.
Food symptoms: Symptoms related to food.
Heart failure: Slow failure of the heart (cardiac insufficiency).
Hypokalemia: Low levels of potassium in the body.
Kidney failure: Total failure of the kidneys to filter waste
Marasmus: A form of malnutrition caused by a severe deficiency of both protein and calories
Menstrual irregularities: Any condition that is associated with the female menstrual cycle
Mental illness: Any psychological syndrome
Obesity: An increase in the body weight greater than that required for normal function that is characterised by the accumulation of excessive fat
Obsessive-compulsive disorder: Behavioral disorder with obsessive thoughts and compulsive acts.
Osteoporosis: Bone thinning and weakening from bone calcium depletion.
Overeating: Eating too much food.
Pregnancy: The condition of supporting a fetus from conception till birth.
Psychiatric disorders: Any condition that affects ones mind
Psychological disorders: Any condition that affects ones mind
Secrecy: Secrecy in behavior possibly including isolation
Suicide: Taking one's own life or attempting to do so.
Thinness: Underweight and thin
Weight gain: Gain of body weight.
Weight loss: Loss of body weight
